The roof takes a beating. Sun cooks it until it smells faintly like hot tar, then rain soaks everything and drips down the gutters like a drumbeat. Snow sits heavy, melts, then freezes again. And the wind, sneaky thing, it slides under an edge and rattles a shingle loose when you’re not looking. I once saw shingles curl up after a brutal summer, almost like they were peeling away on their own, tired of holding on. You don’t notice at first. Then, out of nowhere, there’s a wet spot on the ceiling after a storm and you think, huh, where’d that come from?

Getting up on the roof isn’t exactly a fun Saturday, but sometimes it’s the only way to catch what’s wrong. A tile might be cracked, a shingle might be sitting funny, barely hanging on. Looks harmless until the rain sneaks through. And when it does, it doesn’t just stay put. It spreads. It stains the walls, it smells damp, sometimes there’s mold. There’s a certain pride in a roof that looks cared for. A clean line across the top, no sag, no missing bits, makes the whole house feel sharper. People don’t say anything out loud, but they notice when they walk past. You notice too, pulling into the driveway. Even the bills tell on you. A roof sealed tight holds the warmth in winter, keeps the place cooler in July. Not by a lot, but enough to matter when the electric company sends its little love letters each month.

Roofs aren’t glamorous. Nobody brags about them. But every time I see one with moss creeping up the tiles or shingles dangling like loose teeth, I think, that’s going to hurt someone’s wallet real soon. Better to climb up, curse at the steep pitch, maybe scrape a knee, and keep it solid. It’s not fun, but neither is putting buckets in the living room to catch drips.
